Tradition teaches that Elul was the month when Moses
ascended the mountain for the second time and remained there for forty
days after the incident of the Golden Calf (Ex. 32; 34:27-28).

Moses spent the period between the new moon of Elul (Rosh Chodesh Elul) andYom Kippur (10th day of the month of Tishrei), 40 days, praying for
God’s forgiveness for the people of Israel, only descending from his period of seclusion with God when repentance was complete. the second set of tablets is seen as testimony to God’s great mercy towards the people (Bava Bathra 121a).
The Hebrew month of Elul
The Hebrew month of Elul offers us an opportunity to prepare for the High Holy Days ahead. It is a time of introspection. The Torah inspires us to develop our character, Tikkun Middot, becoming
better people by correcting our faults and improving our character.
