In the spirit of the season, I’d like to share a reflection that has been on my mind, especially given the ongoing challenges faced by Israel—the land that holds a special place in the hearts of many, including myself.

While lighting the Hanukkah candles and celebrating the festival of lights, my thoughts inevitably turn to Israel,  currently enduring what feels like its darkest hour. With family living there, this connection hits close to home, resonating not only on a personal level but with Jews worldwide who share in the collective hope for a brighter future.

In the face of the ongoing complexities, our collective dream echoes: the safe return of hostages and the cherished vision of lasting peace in the Middle East. This dream finds resonance with the millions who sing John Lennon’s lyrics, “Imagine all the people living life in peace.”

Despite the uncertainty that shrouds us, I hold firm to the belief that our dream of peace and resolution is within reach. History, our guiding teacher, shows that dreams, when fueled by determination, can overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges. Israel, like a resilient beacon, will rise above the chaos, embodying the visions of Theodor Herzl, who dreamt of a Jewish homeland, and Eliezer Ben Yehuda, whose dream revived Hebrew as a spoken language.

In the spirit of hope, as we contemplate the struggles faced by Israel, let the words of the Israeli National Anthem, “Hatikvah” (The Hope) resonate in our hearts, echoing the enduring hope for a future of peace and freedom.

Israel will forever be our homeland—a testament to the indomitable spirit of resilience and hope. Am Yisrael Chai – the people of Israel live on, bound together by dreams, aspirations, and an unwavering belief that even in the darkest hours, light will prevail.

Let’s keep the flames of hope, solidarity, and peace burning not just during Hanukkah but throughout the year.
